SURINAME | General information

The Aliens Act 1991 (Vreemdelingenwet 1991) and the Aliens Decree 1995 (Vreemdelingenbesluit 1995) address the terms and conditions of admission to Suriname. This legislation applies to all foreign nationals. A foreign national is defined as anyone not considered Surinamese, under the relevant legislation in this area (Wet op de Nationaliteit en het Ingezetenschap).

As a general rule, all foreign nationals are obliged to apply for a residence permit, unless they qualify as a tourist (see Tourists and visas). In all other cases foreign nationals are obliged to apply for an Authorization for temporary stay ('Temporary Stay') or a residence permit (see Foreign nationals).
